We came up with this unique Halloween food idea based on the popular kid’s snack known in Australia as fairy bread – bread buttered and covered with coloured sprinkles. Also similar to the Dutch hagelslag – buttered bread covered with chocolate sprinkles.
How to make Halloween Sugar Bread?
The ingredients and easy to follow instructions to make coloured sugar and how to decorate the bread can be found on the recipe card below

Ideally, you need a few Halloween coloured food colourings. If you have not got food colouring you can still create ghosts, skulls or skeletons using normal white sugar!
How to create coloured sugar sprinkles?
To give sugar some colour is really easy! Simply add a few drops of food colouring into a food bag and give it a rub until evenly distributed.
If the colour is not vibrant enough, repeat the process.
We created 4 Halloween coloured sugars in green, purple, orange and black.
Pop the sugars into a dish so easier to use when decorating.
Ok so now the sugar is ready you can butter the bread and get creative!
Halloween shaped cutters
We used a mixture of large Halloween shaped cutters in the shapes of a ghost, pumpkin, bat, skull and cat. We also used some smaller ones too to make sure no leftover bread was wasted! (not pictured below, but seen in the final picture).
If you have not got any cutters, then you can always cut your own shapes!
Decorating tips and tricks
We find it easier to keep the cutter on the bread whilst sprinkling the sugar inside with a spoon.
Pumpkin, Ghost, Frankenstein, Bat and Cat shapes for Halloween party food.
You can use a couple of different colours for a good effect. As seen on this pumpkin shape.
Push the cutter down through the bread and brush away the excess sugar.
There you have it! An open Halloween sandwich!
Edible Eyes
I love these edible eyes they give the Halloween shaped bread so much character!
If you can’t get hold of them, you can always use silver or gold balls, sprinkles or chocolate chips instead. You can also get edible glue to help stick them on (or just push them into the bread a little).
Keep the Halloween shaped slices of sugar bread simple or add more decorations, like these white chocolate curls for the skull’s teeth!
I used some smaller cut-outs to use up the offcuts of bread. So in total I only used 5 slices of bread and had loads of sugar leftover!
So you could make a whole loaf worth of Halloween sugar bread for finger food at a Halloween themed party.
Or it would make a fun Halloween activity for children to do at the party.
