Asus reveals its thinnest and lightest Vivobook ahead of Computex 2022

Keen not to compete with other manufacturers for the Computex 2022 spotlight later this month, Asus has taken to the virtual stage ahead of the show to reveal a whole host of upgrades for its laptop range, including its updated Vivobook offering for 2022.

Comprised of the Vivobook S and Vivobook Pro, the Vivobook S offers great performance in a lightweight form factor, while the upgraded Vivobook Pro series offers creative-focused features like a dedicated GPU for more power and Asus’ DialPad.

The ultra-thin Asus Vivobook S (2022) series

The refreshed Vivobook S (2022) series looks to offer a powerful yet lightweight laptop experience.

Measuring in at 17.9mm thick and just 1.6kg, the range is the thinnest in Asus’ Vivobook collection, but the laptops sport high-end components including up to 12th Gen Intel Core i7 12700H (with Intel Evo support on select models), Intel Iris Xe graphics, up to 16GB of upgradable DDR4 RAM and a 1 TB SSD.

If you’re more of an AMD fan, you can opt for an equivalent with up to AMD’s Ryzen 9 6900HX CPU and accompanying AMD Radeon graphics.

It’s not just about internals, though; the Vivobook S collection has been redesigned to stand out in the laptop space, with flashy new colours – including Brave Green and Midnight Black – to match its refreshed look.

The Vivobook S collection is split into the Vivobook S 14/15 and the Vivobook S 14X/S16X, with one obvious design difference between the two; while both laptops feature a metal lid, the premium X models sport an all-metal body for a sturdier overall feel. Regardless of the model, you’ll find design quirks including a 180-degree hinge, a physical webcam shield and Asus’ Antibacterial Guard to “keep the bugs at bay”.

Asus hasn’t slumped in the display department either, with the Vivobook S range sporting OLED panels up to [email protected] and with response times as low as 0.2ms, depending on the variant you opt for. If 4K resolution isn’t important to you, you’ve also got 14.5in and 15.6in 2.8K 120Hz OLED panels to choose from – a first in the laptop market.

Regardless of the display you opt for, Asus claims they’re Pantone Validated for colour accuracy, sport 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut and Vesa DisplayHDR True Black 600 certification for a great viewing experience.

Pricing and availability for the Vivobook S series are yet to be confirmed, but we should hear more about the ultrathin laptop in the coming months.

The Asus Vivobook Pro (2022) range

Also updated for 2022 is the Asus Vivobook Pro range.

Pitched as the ideal laptop for creators, Asus claims that the Vivobook Pro range – comprised of the Pro 16X OLED, Pro 15X OLED, Pro 14X OLED, Pro 16 OLED and Pro 15 OLED – can offer top-end performance without the associated price tag, though without confirmed UK/US pricing across the entire range, we’ll have to wait and see on the latter.

Headline features include up to Intel’s latest 12th-gen i9 12900H, or AMD fans can go for CPUs up to the Ryzen 9 6900HX instead.

Whichever you go for, that’s paired with up to 32GB of DDR5 RAM, a 2TB PCIe 4.0 SSD and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3070 Ti for impressive performance that should be more than enough to run creative apps like Blender, Premiere Pro and Photoshop.

There’s also a handy virtual DialPad rotary control within the trackpad that works with creative apps in combination with Asus’ ProArt Creator Hub app, giving creatives an easy way to adjust brush size, zoom and the like in supported apps.

Being focused on creatives, display quality is important, and that probably explains the high-end options on offer including the ‘worlds first’ 16in 3.2K 120Hz OLED, a 15.6in 2.8K 120Hz OLED and a [email protected] OLED NanoEdge display on offer, depending on the model you opt for.

The entire range is Pantone Validated for industry-standard colour rendering, and offers 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut too.

The Vivobook Pro also offers better connectivity than its standard sibling, with features including a 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 port, HDMI 2.1, USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0 ports, a microSD card reader, a 2.5Gb LAN port and Wi-Fi 6E.

If you’re tempted by Asus’ new top-end Vivobook range, two flavours of Vivobook Pro 15X OLED – the M3500 and N7600 –  will be available in the UK sometime later this month, coming in at £799 and £1,399.99 respectively. The rest of the Vivobook Pro range is yet to be confirmed, both in terms of region availability and pricing.

Elsewhere, Asus also launched a range of new Zenbook laptops, including the most powerful entry yet in the Zenbook Pro 16X.
