Xiaomi recently became the 2nd biggest seller of smartphones worldwide, overtaking Apple and closing in on Samsung.

The company isn’t resting on its laurels though, with rumours suggesting it could be about to release a new version of the Mi Mix with an edge-to-edge display and bigger price tag. Here’s all we know so far about the Mi Mix 4.

When is the release date for the Mi Mix 4?

There’s no official word from Xiaomi on when the Mi Mix 4 will arrive, but many sites are already reporting a leak from Chinese tipster Bald Panda that Xiaomi will host a launch event at the end of August.

It’s expected that the company will release not only the Mi Mix 4 but also the new version of its mobile operating system, MIUI 13, the Mi Pad 5 tablet and a new device called the Mi CC1 that GizmoChina says will be ‘a designer smartphone with an emphasis on camera performance’.

Gizchina reports that another Chinese tech leaker, @DCS, posted on Weibo that the Mi Mix 4 might actually arrive before the event, stating that the release date would be 11 August – though this seems a little unlikely, as it’s the same day as the next Galaxy Unpacked event, when Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.

We’ve already seen confirmation from Gizchina that the Mi Mix 4 appears to have recently passed its 3C certification in China, so an imminent release is a definite possibility.

It’s likely that the new device, if it does arrive in August, may be China-only for a while, as is often the case with Xiaomi. The Mi Mix 3 launched in the country back in October 2018 and came to the UK and other markets in January 2019. This was followed the Mi Mix 3 5G, which debuted in China in February 2019 and finally landed in the UK in July.

One of the most exciting releases from Xiaomi, the Mi Mix Fold, hasn’t even been made available outside China even though it was released back in April 2021.

So, while Chinese customers might be preparing their overdrafts for August, the rest of us should have a little more time to save up.

How much will the Mi Mix 4 cost?

This has been the subject of much conjecture recently, with Chinese tech site My Drivers reporting that the new device may have a price-tag higher than the Mi 11 Ultra. This would be quite a departure for the Mix, as the Ultra costs a whopping £1,199/€1,199, while the Mi Mix 3 5G was priced at £599/€699.

We’d be very surprised to see Xiaomi double the price of the popular Mix range, so we’re taking this rumour with a large pinch of salt. But some of the proposed specs that we’ve seen bandied around could indicate that the Mix 4 will be a premium device.

What will be the specs of the Mi Mix 4?

Again, we’re purely in the realms of speculation here, with no official word from Xiaomi on what specs we’ll see in the Mi Mix 4.

Gizmochina reports that the new device will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ processor, which will be standard fare for high-end devices releasing in the second half of 2021. This is generally agreed on by all the leaks we’ve seen, so the Mix 4 will have some serious firepower under the hood.

The report also states that Xiaomi will fit a 6.67in FHD+ OLED display with curved glass. This will be accompanied by an under-display camera, allowing the front panel to remain free from the notches or pin-hole openings to which we’ve grown accustomed.

This is interesting, as the previous Mi Mix 3 5G avoided the problem by utilising a sliding camera that could be hidden when not in use. It seemed to do the trick, but if the Mi Mix 4 does employ the under-display camera, then it would be one of the first devices to do so – the ZTE Axon 20 5G was the first.

One feature that was highlighted on the C3 certification was that the Mi Mix 4 will come with 120W fast-charging, and other sites positing that it could also include up to 80W wireless fast-charging capabilities for its rumoured 4500mAh or 5000mAh battery.

Aside from that, the rest of the specs remain a mystery, but we’d predict an 8GB/128GB memory and storage configuration for the base model, three cameras on the back rather than the two 12MP sensors found on the Mi Mix 3 5G, and a similar slimline design.

Naturally, we’ll be updating this article as more news becomes available, but until then you  can also read our guide to the best Xiaomi phones and best Xiaomi deals in the UK.
